Description:Goldenseal is a perennial woodland herb nicknamed a seal which gets its name from its appearance when the stalks begin to die down.  This hairy yellow flower stem rises in the spring to about nine inches with wrinkled leafs that resembles basal.  The entire plant is covered with small downward pointing hairs and yields a single small flower with three small greenish-white sepals in the month of April.  In July a fruit ripens with the appearance of a raspberry which is not edible.  Goldenseal is a protected plant which Inno-Vita uses only as a cultivated herb.
Inno-Vita Parts Used: Root.
Uses:This herb was much used by Native Americans who introduced it to early American settlers.  It was used as face paint, clothing dye, insect repellant and as an application to external wounds.  Goldenseal’s popularity gained widespread when its medicinal virtues became evident in the 1850’s and then became an important item of commerce.  Goldenseal has shown activity against Staph, Strep, Chlamydia, diptheria, E. coli, Salmonella cholera, pneumonia, Giardia and Candida.  It is very effective in drying up mucus membranes as well as constricting blood vessels, which can help stop bleeding.  Chemical Constituents: Alkaloids (berberine, hydrastine, canadine, berberastine, canadaline, hydrastinine), flavonoids, resin, albumin, starch, chlorogenic acid, calcium chromium, manganese, potassium, unsaturated fatty acids.
