Biological Name: Hymenaea courbaril
Common Names: Brazilian Copal, Jatobá, Algarrobo, Azucar huayo, Jataí, Courbaril, Cayenne Copal.

Origin: Central Himalayas and the hotter parts of India as well as the Car Nicobar Islands.

Description: A very large tree that serves as a jungle canopy indigenous to the Amazon Rainforest.  It grows in the tropical regions of Central America on the ridges, slopes or high riverbanks.

Uses:Jatoba has a long history with the indigenous people of the Amazon Rainforest who chew the bark to treat diarrhea and inflammation.  Other uses include making tea from the leaves which provide long lasting energy.  Jatoba also contains strong antifungal and antimicrobial properties.  Some of these qualities are due to the leaves phytochemicals – terpenes and phenolics which protect the tree from jungle fungus.  Jatoba has also shown to provide an inhibition to various microorganisms in the blood.
