Name: Orris
Biological Name: Iris florentina
Common Names: Florentine Orris, Fleur-de-lis.

Origin: The Greeks called this herb Iris which translates as “rainbow” due to the many colors found in its flower. It was commonly found in the stony Mediterranean regions of Istria, Croatia, Florence and Lucca and was first cultivated in the Middle Ages by the city of Florence. 

Description: This thick rhizome perennial has a straight flower stem which grows to a height of two feet.  Its leaves have a sharp sword-like presence.

Uses:The root is commonly available in a powdered form which is generally called Orris.  Active constituents found within this violet scented rootstock was principally used for chest problems, abdominal pain and diarrhea.  Today most of its uses are found within the cosmetic industry.
